Description

Grange Farmhouse is an early 18th century farmhouse, with later 18th and early 19th century additions and minor alterations. The farmhouse is constructed of red brick, with the rear range rendered, and features gauged brick dressings. The original early 18th century range, located at the rear, is a two-storey, three-bay section with a steeply pitched plain tile roof, a tall central brick ridge stack, and a dentilled eaves band. The later 18th century addition, a five-bay, three-storey section at the south end of the front range, has a graduated slate roof with brick coped gables on moulded stone kneelers, brick gable stacks, a central brick ridge stack, and a bracketed painted stone cornice. A further two-storey, three-bay section was added in the early 19th century, to the north, and includes a graduated slate roof with a brick coped gable on brick kneeler, an external brick gable stack to the north, and an advanced central, pedimented bay.

The 18th century part of the front range has a central Tuscan columned doorcase with a plain entablature and double panelled doors, set below a large, fan-traceried overlight. Pairs of glazing bar sashes flank the doorcase, and above are five similar windows. Further windows are located above these, each with a flat gauged brick arch. The early 19th century north section features a full height, semi-circular headed recess to the central bay, with a glazing bar sash window on the ground floor. A similar sash window is located on the south side, and a blind recess of a similar size is to the north. Above, the window and recess arrangement is repeated, and above that, there are two small blind recesses with flat arches on either side. The sashes are notably close to the front wall, with the architraves projecting outwards. A panelled 18th century door is found on the east side of the rear wing, along with a 20th century window and glazing bar sashes above.

Attached to the front of the farmhouse are early 19th century railings with a continuous dog rail and arrow head finials. A curtain wall is attached to the south end, and features a blind recess and a semi-circular headed doorcase with a panelled semi-circular headed door. Inside the 18th century section of the farmhouse, remnants of an open well staircase remain, with a moulded ramped handrail and newels composed of four knopped columns on vase balusters, though the wooden balusters have been replaced with iron scrolls. A south-facing first-floor room contains early 19th century recessed library shelves with reeded surrounds.
