Description

The conservatory, attached garden walls, and tunnel were built in 1778 and the 19th century. They are constructed of red brick and rubble stone with sandstone dressings. The conservatory features hipped Welsh slate roofs and is set within a large irregular quadrangular enclosure. To the north, there is a smaller irregular quadrangular enclosure divided into two sections by a pathway flanked by walls. Further north, there is a much smaller quadrangular enclosure with lower walls. The walls are primarily made of brick, with some sections of rubble stone, and they have flat stone copings or moulded brick copings. There are various pilaster buttresses, gate piers, and segment-headed doorways with panelled doors. Inside the enclosure, there are lean-to greenhouses. A pedestrian tunnel leads from the north into the park, allowing gardeners to work without being seen from the house. In the small northern enclosure, there is a lean-to cartshed and outbuildings. The conservatory is positioned between the two main enclosures. The south elevation features five giant round-arched windows with a stone impost band and keyblocks, along with remains of glazing bar sashes. The north elevation is two storeys high with five bays, doorways, and glazing bar sashes under keyed wedge stone lintels, with similar glazing bar sashes above and a moulded eaves cornice. The walled enclosures included a kitchen garden and a 'physic garden', which may have been laid out by William Eames.
