Description
The ice house, located north east of the conservatory in Calke Park, is likely from the late 18th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble sandstone and is set into a trough in the ground, covered by a mound of earth. The structure features two long rectangular chambers. The entrance end is flanked by curved wing walls that frame a segmental arched doorway. A short passage leads into the first barrel vaulted chamber, while a flat arched doorway connects to the second similar chamber. There is a segmental arched opening at the far end of the second chamber, and each chamber has two circular shoot holes in the roof.
