Description

This is a late 18th or early 19th century dovecote with an integrated cart shed, situated within the grounds of Ridgeway Farm in Repton. The building is roughly square in plan, with a ground floor cart shed and a dovecote chamber above. It is constructed of red brick with plain stone kneelers, a dentilled eaves course, and a plain tile roof. A cupola with a decorative metal weathervane sits atop the roof.

The front (north) wall features a double door opening, originally with double doors, set below a chamfered lintel beam. A shuttered opening is visible on the upper floor of the west gable. The cupola incorporates a two-tiered set of perch shelves and arched openings on each face, with a moulded cornice and a shallow pyramidal roof. A 20th century corrugated sheet open shed attached to the south elevation is not considered to be of special architectural interest.

The former cart shed has a substantial spine beam with run-out stops and exposed joists supporting the floor of the dovecote chamber above. The interior walls of the dovecote loft are lined with continuous brick perch shelves and regularly spaced nesting holes. The roof structure includes a truncated queen post truss and two tiers of side purlins.

Historical records indicate the site of Ridgeway Farm was undeveloped in 1762, with the ‘Ridgeway Field’ subdivided into individual strips. The dovecote was built around 1800 as part of a farmstead developed following enclosure of the open fields in 1769. Subsequent maps from 1829 and 1882 confirm the farm's configuration, with the farmhouse to the east and the farm buildings and dovecote to the west of a north-south track. The dovecote and cart shed form a group with the adjacent Ridgeway Farmhouse.
