Description
The pillar fountain at the junction of Melbourne Lane and Stanton Hill is a Grade II listed structure. It was manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy Ltd of Kilmarnock and erected in 1914 under the instruction of Sir Vauncey Harpur-Crewe of Calke Abbey. The fountain features a fluted cast iron cylindrical column topped with a moulded dome. It includes a tap lever handle, a lion mask surround at the tap outlet, and an integral bucket platform at the base. The design, known as Kennedy's patent, is a self-closing, anti-freezing pillar fountain that dates from the late 19th century. This fountain is part of the fresh water supply system for the village of Ticknall, which is part of the Harpur-Crewe estate, and there are 16 other similar examples that still exist. The fountains were supplied with water by gravity from a reservoir filled by a wind-pump drawing from a well.
