Description
The War Memorial in Woodville was built between 1925 and 1926. It is made of Cornish granite and features a bronze plaque. The memorial takes the form of a tall, moulded cenotaph topped with a Maltese cross. It stands on a stepped plinth and has a bronze inscription plaque on the front. The inscription honors the late Mr. W. Cousens, who was the respected headmaster of the Wesleyan School in the village for 30 years, and his scholars who lost their lives in the Great War from 1914 to 1918. The plaque lists 130 men, including 77 scholars, who fell in action. On the reverse side, the names of those who died in 1939-1945 are also recorded. This memorial is notable for commemorating both the former headmaster and the students who were among those killed, as well as other men from the parish.
