Description
The Church of St Stephen is a parish church built in 1846 by Stevens in the New Norman style. It is constructed of ashlar with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with raised coped gables. The building has a high chamfered plinth, blocking course, and continuous cill and impost bands.
The church consists of a nave with partial aisles, an apsidal chancel, a south porch, and a north-west vestry. There is a single west tower. The west front has a large central round-headed doorway with a moulded surround and double doors, flanked by two small single round-headed lancets with moulded surrounds. Above this is a round-headed window featuring two round-headed lancets and shafts with moulded arches. The central section has a five-bay blind round-arched arcade.
The buttressed south-west tower has a single round-arched bell opening on each face and is topped by a pyramidal hipped roof with a weather vane. Attached to the north-west corner is a small gabled vestry with a pair of round-headed lancets. The two western bays of the nave contain two round-headed windows, while the three projecting eastern bays have three round-headed windows. The elongated apsidal chancel features five round-headed windows. Attached to the south of the chancel is a projecting porch with a large round-headed doorway and double doors.
