Description
The war memorial, located in the grounds of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, was erected around 1920 by local stonemason Arthur Hilder of Tenterden. It is made of grey Cornish granite and takes the form of a Celtic cross, standing about six feet high. The memorial features a rough granite plinth, which is set on a square granite step. The side of the plinth facing the road is inscribed with the words: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE / MEN OF THE PARISH WHO GAVE / THEIR LIFE FOR KING AND COUNTRY / DURING THE WAR 1914-1918," followed by the names of those commemorated. Additionally, there is a supplementary tablet on a granite step that lists the names of those who fell in the Second World War. A faculty for the erection of this memorial was granted by the Diocese of Canterbury in February 1920. This memorial serves as a significant reminder of the impact of world events on the village and holds strong group value.
