Description
The five flights of steps between the terraces at Melbourne Hall Gardens were constructed around 1704 as part of a French style garden designed by the Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall. The work was carried out by William Cooke of Walcot. Made of stone, the steps consist of two flights on either side of the terrace and one central flight. Each flight has ten steps featuring moulded nosings and low retaining walls on either side, which end in low square piers. These piers are now topped with later gadrooned urns. The top step of each flight is wide and has diamond patterned paving. This feature is included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I.
