Description

Three forcing walls, built around 1704, are located in the gardens of Melbourne Hall. These walls were constructed as part of a French-style garden designed by Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall, with the work carried out by William Cooke of Walcot. The walls are made of red brick with vitrified headers and feature stone copings. Each of the three walls stands 12 feet high and is set about 30 feet apart, with pilaster strips at regular intervals along the southern face. Two of the northern walls have later outbuildings and greenhouses attached. The site is included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I.
