Description

The Pedestal and Four Seasons Vase in Melbourne Hall Gardens was created in 1705, with the vase designed by Jan van Nost and the pedestal by Devigne. This structure was part of a French-style garden designed by the Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall. The pedestal is made of stone and features a panelled design with a moulded base and cornice on a stepped square plinth. Each panel is intricately carved with foliage and swags, and central roundels are inscribed with 'TC'.

Atop the pedestal sits a magnificent baroque lead vase, supported by four seated lead monkeys. The vase has a gadrooned base and a bowl decorated with a frieze of putti and foliage swags. The lid features a bulbous base with four scrolled handles, each topped by the head of a Season, with additional panels and more swags in between. The top of the vase is adorned with a lattice work basket overflowing with fruit and flowers. This vase was presented to Thomas Coke by Queen Anne and is included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I.
