Description

The garden walls attached to the south front of Melbourne Hall, along with the attached railings and wall to the east, date from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, with the railings added around 1725 by Robert Bakewell. These features are part of a French-style garden designed by the Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall, with construction carried out by William Cooke of Walcot.

The walls, approximately 12 feet high, are made of rubble stone on the east face and red brick on the west face. Each wall features a semi-circular headed rusticated early 18th-century arch at the north end, topped with a large double keystone, and tall stone piers with plain entablatures and large banded ball finials at the south end.

To the east of the eastern pier are Bakewell's elegant railings, which consist of panels with six elaborate lyre-shaped standards and a strapwork frieze at the top. Beyond the railings to the east is a high rubble stone wall that encloses the garden to the south, which includes a segmental headed raised doorcase at the eastern end. This site is included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I.
