Description

The pair of pedestals supporting fruit bowl vases in Melbourne Hall Gardens dates from the late 17th century. They were incorporated into an early 18th-century garden designed by the Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall, with work carried out by William Cooke of Walcot. The pedestals are made of stone and are similar in design. Each features a plain pedestal on a stepped plinth, topped with a large lattice work basket filled with fruit and flowers, standing on a moulded tapering base. These pedestals likely belonged to the earlier formal garden at Melbourne Hall. They are included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I.
