Description
The stone fountain located to the south of the lower terrace in Melbourne Hall Gardens dates back to around 1704 and has undergone later repairs. It features a central statue created by Jan van Nost. This fountain was part of a French-style garden designed by the Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall, with the work carried out by William Cooke of Walcot. The fountain consists of a circular stone pool with moulded nosing to the copings and a plain pedestal in the center, which is topped by a small lead statue of a boy blowing a whistle, from which the water issues. It was designed as a pair to a similar fountain located to the north. The fountain is included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I.
