Description

This pair of cherubs, created around 1700 by Jan van Nost, is located to the south of the Statue of Mercury in Melbourne Hall Gardens. They were part of a French-style garden designed by the Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall. Made of stone and lead, each cherub stands on a plain pedestal with a moulded base and cornice. The eastern cherub is depicted climbing a tree with a quiver on his back and is covered in bees, while the western cherub is shaping his bow. This pair is also included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I.
