Description
The Old Mill is an early 17th and 18th century watermill with an outbuilding, later converted into a house around 1975. It is constructed of rubble stone, with raised quoins, and the west elevation is now rendered. The building has plain tile roofs with moulded stone copings to the gables and parapets, and a 20th century stone stack on the east elevation. The original mill is single bayed, with a 20th century extension at right angles connecting it to a later two-bay outbuilding. It is single storey with attics, and the attic level is the most visible from the western street elevation due to a significant change in ground level. The west elevation features a central gable with parapets, and steps lead up to a central 20th century double-glazed door. The east elevation has a central 17th century chamfered door with a low inserted 20th century opening below, and above this is a two-light recessed and chamfered mullion window with a dripmould. A 20th century weatherboarded extension is attached to the north side, alongside an 18th century outbuilding to the east; all openings in these are 20th century. A 19th century two-light recessed and chamfered mullion window sits above the door, and a similar 17th century window with a dripmould is above that in the gable. The south elevation has a large glazed opening where an overshot water wheel was formerly located, along with a 20th century window in the gable. A blocked hole in the adjacent wall shows the original water feed from the pool. The north elevation features a 17th century two-light window, similar to the others, in the gable. Inside, there are large chamfered timbers.
