Description
This is a cottage attached to the west end of Buntingfield, dated 1638. It is a remnant of a larger house that has since been replaced by a 19th-century building, of which this listed part serves as a wing. The cottage is constructed of rendered rubble gritstone, lined out, with ashlar dressings. It features moulded copings on the gables, an ashlar ridge stack, and a concrete tiled roof. The building has a shallow T-plan.
The west elevation has two storeys and two bays, with an off-centre stack. To the north, there are two-light chamfered mullioned windows with 20th-century frames that include top-hung vents to the east, a three-light casement in an 18th-century flush surround, and above, a three-light chamfered mullioned window. All the mullioned windows have drip moulds. The south gable has a former two-light chamfered mullioned window on the first floor and a two-light attic window with a four-paned horizontal sliding sash, also featuring a drip mould. Above the attic window is a datestone inscribed 'I B E 1638'. There is a raised parapet at the south-east corner. The stub of a former central range is now linked to the 19th-century house. Inside, there is an 18th-century jowelled hearth in the south room. The original doorway was likely located against the stack on the western side. It is said that this cottage formerly served as a Quaker meeting house. Buntingfield itself is not included in this or any other listing.
