Description
Hillside Cottage is a house dating from the mid-18th century and later alterations in the 18th century. It is constructed of roughly squared and coursed sandstone rubble, with a slate roof. The right-hand gable of the main three-story, two-bay house is coped with an ashlar chimney cap. A second chimney is located near the centre of the ridge, and a third chimney belongs to the adjacent property, Over Asher.
The house is composed of a main three-story, two-bay block and a lower two-story, two-bay wing to the right. Quoins and a change in stonework suggest that the right-hand bay of the main house is of the same build as the wing, with the third storey and the left-hand bay being later additions. The windows of the main house are generally of two lights with stone surrounds and flat-faced mullions; a single ground-floor window has been replaced with a 20th-century bow window, while the others are a mix of sash windows without glazing bars and timber casements. A doorway, situated between the bays, has a stone surround, partially quoined. The right-hand wing has two windows of two lights on the first floor. A door surround, similar to that of the main house, is located at the left on the ground floor, with a window with plain reveals to its right. To the right are timber garage doors. The interior was not fully inspected, but the middle room appears to have a blocked stone fireplace with jowelled jambs.
