Description
The outbuildings to the south-west of Hipper Hall are farm structures dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 19th centuries. They are timber framed and now encased in coursed rubble sandstone, with some parts featuring weatherboarding on the upper floor. The roof is covered with stone slates. The buildings are two storeys high and consist of two bays, with the lower walls of two former bays and the remains of the north-east gable wall still visible after a partial collapse in 1990. The north-west elevation has no openings and is primarily stone walled, incorporating large padstones for the frame posts, one of which remains in place. The south-west gable features a stone staircase and an overloft doorway beneath a plain stone lintel. The standing two bays include one complete framed partition wall that supports a queen-strut roof truss, which carries a braced single-purlin roof with a diagonally set ridge purlin. The tie beam is supported by a jowel post, with curved braces extending laterally and longitudinally from the post to the tie beam and wallplate soffits. The jowel post also carries intermediate rails and wall-plates. The bay at the south-west end is an addition, featuring a stone partition wall and incorporating a single cruck truss. This building is an important example of the timber-framing vernacular traditions that predate stone masonry in upland Derbyshire.
