Description
A group of four tomb chests dating from the mid-18th century is located approximately 20 metres northeast of the Church of All Saints in Ashover. These tomb chests are made of sandstone and feature moulded tops and bases with panelled sides. The south-east tomb has two raised and bolection-moulded panels on each side, along with carved end panels. The north-east tomb displays panels with carvings, including an angel's head with wings and an urn with foliage, separated by fluted vertical strips. The north-west tomb has similar uprights and features panels with incised patterns. The south-west tomb is lower and has had one side panel replaced by an inscribed grave slab, which includes the name 'Job Nightingale' (died 1737). Other inscriptions are mostly illegible, but the one on the north-west tomb includes the name 'Thomas Nightingale' (died 1746, possibly).
