Description

Shirland Lodge Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, with an 18th-century addition and various 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of red brick featuring diaper work on the south gable wall and the south section of the west facade. The building has sandstone foundations, dressings, and quoins, while the northern extension is made of coursed sandstone rubble. The roofs are covered with plain tiles, and the gables have moulded stone copings and kneelers, topped with ridge ball finials. A large central ridge stack has rendered panels on all sides, and there is a brick side wall stack for the extension.

The farmhouse has three bays plus a single bay extension and stands two storeys high, with attics. The west facade features a basement with a chamfered doorcase, a 20th-century door, and a 2-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, both of which have moulded hoods. Above this, there is a central two-storey gabled porch with a boldly rusticated semi-circular headed blocked doorcase that has a dropped keystone with a lozenge motif. To the south, there is a recessed and chamfered window with a moulded hood and 20th-century casements. To the north, a 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion window is present, along with a 20th-century door and window in the extension. Above the porch, there is a single light recessed and chamfered window, and to the south, a similar 3-light window with a hood. A smaller 3-light 20th-century casement is located to the north, with a 2-light flush mullion window beyond.

At the rear, there is a three-storey stair turret featuring all original recessed and chamfered mullion windows. The south gable wall includes two 3-light and one 2-light 17th-century mullioned windows. Inside, the farmhouse has heavily moulded crossed beams with a central plasterwork boss in the south first-floor bedroom. The original staircase was replaced in the 19th century.
