Description
Southgate Old House is a house dating from the mid-17th century, located in the parish of Eckington. It is constructed of coursed coal measures sandstone with quoins, has coped gables with moulded kneelers, a ridge stack, and a roof covered in Roman tiles. The building has a central lobby entrance plan with a single-story contemporary range to the west rear and later additions to the east rear.
The house presents as two bays with gables, each front gable containing a two-light chamfer mullioned window and a single-light window beneath a continuous dripmoulding. The central doorway has a chamfered quoined surround and a slightly cambered lintel. To the east of the doorway is a three-light window, and to the west are a four-light and a two-light window, all with dripmoulds and glazing bar casements. A glazed door has been inserted on the west end, with 19th-century extensions to the rear. A two-light chamfer mullioned window is located in the gable facing the street on the attic floor. Rainwater is directed away from the front elevation by three stone spouts.
Internally, two cruck trusses remain, with single purlins and mortices for windbraces. A ground floor hearth in the west end room features complex moulding to the hearth bressumer and a heck post. An adjoining single-story, two-bay range at a right angle to the main house contains a doorway and a blocked two-light chamfer mullioned window, and further cruck trusses and a 17th-century hearth.
