Description
Stodhart Tunnel is a tramway tunnel entrance built in 1796, designed by Benjamin Outram, the engineer for the Peak Forest Tramway. It is constructed from coursed squared and rockfaced gritstone. The entrance features concave walling with ashlar coping, standing 4 metres high, and has a segment-headed archway that is 2 metres high in the center. The archway includes rock-faced jambs and voussoirs. Inside, the tunnel is lined with rock-faced gritstone and extends approximately 200 yards into the hillside. The other end of the tunnel has been filled in, and the tunnel portal has been demolished.
