Description

This is a late 19th-century detached house, with a minor 20th-century addition. It was reportedly built for the Ryder family. The house is constructed of rock-faced millstone grit with ashlar dressings. It features mansard pavilion roofs covered in Westmoreland slate, with stone stacks. The style is French Chateau.

The exterior is two storeys plus an attic. Architectural details include a plinth, a ground-floor lintel band, a first-floor sill band, and moulded eaves. The symmetrical front has seven windows, with a taller central section. The central doorway has a moulded ashlar surround, double half-glazed six-panel doors, and an above a segment-headed plain sash in a moulded ashlar surround topped by an oval dormer with an ashlar surround. To either side are slightly projecting two-storey tripartite plain sashes, with the upper-floor sashes being segment-headed and topped with pavilion roofs and moulded ashlar gabled dormers with two sashes. Further along are set-back sections with single plain sashes in moulded ashlar surrounds, the upper-floor sashes being segment-headed. On either side are single two-storey canted bay windows with plain sashes, the upper-floor sashes being segment-headed, both outer bays topped with oval dormer windows in moulded ashlar surrounds. The returns of the house feature similar two-storey canted bay windows and plain sashes.

Inside, the original staircase remains, as does some plasterwork. The building was originally known as Corbar Hill House and should not be confused with Wye House (now Cavendish School), which was built by Henry Currey in 1862 and is also located on Corbar Road.
