Description
The lodge and gate to the Devonshire Royal Hospital, built in 1868 with 20th-century additions, were constructed for the Trustees of the Devonshire Hospital. The building is made of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. It has a single stone stack and a chamfered plinth, with deep moulded eaves supported by brackets. The structure has a T-plan and is a single storey.
The south-east gable front displays a deeply moulded open pediment with brackets and a single 3-light window. This window features a central round arched light with a keystone, flanked by columns and lower, narrower round arched lights, all fitted with plain sashes and a projecting sill on brackets. The south-west and north-east gable fronts each contain a single 2-light window with round arched lights and keystones, also with plain sashes and projecting sills on brackets.
Set back in the eastern return is a corner porch with two round arches, supported by a square column and featuring a blocked doorway. There is an attached low wall with chamfered coping and two tall square gate piers, which have chamfered bases and moulded tops, topped with iron lanterns that hold glass globes.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, in 1859, half of the former stables to the Crescent were donated to the poor by the 6th Duke of Devonshire. The Devonshire Hospital was established in this location in 1868 when the 7th Duke transferred the building to the Trustees along with the Pleasure Grounds. This lodge and gate are included for their group value with the Royal Devonshire Hospital.
