Description
The Drinking Well at Devonshire Royal Hospital is a structure built in 1882, with renovations around 1990. It is constructed from tooled dressed gritstone and ashlar, featuring ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs that have square louvred vents at the ridge. The building is single storey with a plinth and flush ashlar quoins.
The south front has a single bay with a round-headed doorway that includes 6-panel double doors and a large fanlight with glazing bars and a moulded inner arch. The outer arch is connected by an impost band with an inscription that reads, "ST ANN'S WELL WATER PUMP ROOM FOR DEVONSHIRE HOSPITAL PATIENTS ONLY," all beneath an open pedimented gable.
On the west front, there is a slightly projecting, off-centre single bay with round-headed windows. The inner arch of these windows is linked to the round-headed outer arch by an impost band that bears the inscription, "DEVONSHIRE HOSPITAL DRINKING WELL AD 1882," also under an open pedimented gable. There are single 12-pane glazing bar windows on either side, with a smaller glazing bar window set back to the left.
The interior has not been inspected but is said to contain a pump that supplies water to the Devonshire Royal Hospital.
