Description

The Pump Room, marked on the OS map as St Ann's Well, is located in Buxton. It was built in 1894 and underwent alterations, including the removal of domes in 1912 and a conversion in the late 20th century. Designed by H. Currey, the building is constructed of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings and features a flat roof.

The structure has a T-shaped plan and is a single storey. The street front has seven windows arranged in a 1:5:1 pattern. The central section is adorned with Tuscan Doric pilasters and an entablature inscribed with "ST ANN'S WELL," topped by a balustrade. It features five round moulded arches with keystones and moulded imposts, each containing a single two-light window with a fanlight. Flanking this central section are two slightly projecting rusticated square pavilions with pediments. Each pavilion has a round moulded arch with a keystone and moulded imposts, leading to 20th-century double doors and overlights. The side and rear facades of the pavilions maintain a similar design.

The returns of the building have two windows between rusticated piers, with round moulded arches containing two-light windows with fanlights. The rear of the building features a curved wall with a moulded parapet and five casement windows, alongside a central three-light window flanked by single light windows and two-light windows.

Inside, the Pump Room retains an open hall and many original features, including a shallow tri-partite coved ceiling, decorated plastered beams, marble pillars, plaster roundels, tiled floors, Art Nouveau glass, and panelled doors with oval overlights. The pump or well is reputed to survive in situ, located in a sunken basement at the rear of the building.
