Description
The Palace Hotel, formerly known as the Buxton Hotel, is a hotel built in 1868 with 20th-century alterations and additions, designed by Henry Currey. It features coursed dressed millstone grit with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate Mansard roof adorned with ornate iron ridge railings, showcasing a French chateau style.
The hotel stands three storeys high, plus an attic and basement. It has a moulded plinth, a ground floor impost band, a moulded cornice band on the first floor, and a moulded band on the second floor. The deeply moulded eaves cornice is supported by brackets and features an iron railed parapet. The main façade is symmetrical with 17 windows arranged in a pattern of 2:4:1:3:1:4:2, highlighted by a projecting five-window center and two-window pavilions.
A central projecting porch features triple round arches supported by painted cast-iron columns, with double doors and three round-headed windows with margin glazing. Above, there are three cross casements with pilaster surrounds and bracketed hoods that form balconies with iron railings over the three round-headed windows, which also have flat hoods. The attic includes an open pediment and a tripartite window with a round-headed center.
The side bays are set back and have round-headed doorways, with similar fenestration as the main block. The four-window side wings are set back and slightly project at the ground floor, topped with a balustrade and similar fenestration to the central block, featuring pedimented dormer windows in the attic. The two-window outer pavilions slightly project and have similar fenestration, with rusticated pilaster strips at the corners. The central section and side pavilions are connected by low stone walls and ornate iron railings.
The left return of the building originally had four bays but now has seven bays, with a right-angled wing and similar architectural detailing. Inside, the hotel retains a large entrance hall with stairs leading to the rear, both featuring ornate plasterwork and marble pillars.
