Description
The screen wall to the former train shed is a Grade II listed structure made of coursed millstone grit with ashlar dressings. It is aligned from north-west to south-east and is located on the west side of the railway tracks. The wall features a short left return and a longer right return that connects to the station building, which is not of special interest.
The exterior of the gabled south-west screen wall, which once covered the station, includes a central round-headed archway that contains a very large lunette with ornate radial iron glazing bars painted white. The archway is framed by a moulded ashlar surround inscribed with ‘LONDON AND NORTH WESTERN RAILWAY CO’ and has moulded impost bands. On either side of the archway are wide projecting pilasters topped with a moulded cornice supported by moulded stone corbels. The broad shallow coped gable features a series of round-headed corbel arches beneath it.
To the left of the main wall is a slightly lower section that has moulded eaves and a terminal pilaster buttress. This part includes a central round-arched, keyed doorway, which has a decorative iron bracket above it, likely intended for a lamp. Flanking this doorway are single blind panels that feature a dentilled course. The right return of the wall has been lowered, making the original string course now appear as the parapet. This section has a stone plinth and a slightly raised central area flanked by pilasters, which includes a wide centrally-placed segmental arched doorway with a hoodmould. The left return is capped with a moulded stone parapet.
