Description

Winster Place, formerly known as The Royal Hotel, is a hotel built in 1851 that has been converted into shops. It was constructed for the 6th Duke of Devonshire and features dressed tooled stone with ashlar dressings and vermiculated quoins. The building stands three storeys tall with a curved front and has a moulded first-floor band and a dentillated cornice topped by a solid parapet.

The street front includes twelve windows and a central recessed doorway with double glazed doors and an overlight, all framed in a moulded ashlar surround. The outer opening features Ionic square columns and round columns in antis, supporting a flat hood on paired brackets. To the left, there are three rusticated segmental arches with 20th-century shop windows, while to the right is one similar segmental arch followed by four round-headed rusticated arches that alternate between 20th-century doors and shop windows.

Above the central window is a moulded surround with brackets supporting an open pediment, flanked by six cross casement windows with alternating segmental and triangular pediments, all featuring bracketed sills. Above is a central segment-headed window with a moulded surround and block cartouche, flanked by six similar windows with plain surrounds, keystones, and bracketed sills, all fitted with two-light casements. The curved right corner has a 20th-century doorway above which is a cross casement in a moulded surround with a segmental pediment, above a blank panel. The right return has three windows that match the fenestration of the main facade. The interior has not been inspected.
