Description

Longden Court, constructed in the late 18th century, is a lodging block now serving as a shop and residential accommodation. The north elevation is built of coursed, squared Millstone Grit, while the rear and flank elevations are of uncoursed rubble Millstone Grit, incorporating ashlar sandstone quoins and surrounds for windows and doors. The roof is slate-covered.

The building is rectangular, with its principal north-facing elevation ten irregular bays wide. The eight westernmost bays of the north elevation are arranged symmetrically, containing doorways in the innermost bays with windows adjacent. A stone staircase leads to a first-floor doorway in the outermost bay, and there are two windows on each of the first and second floors. All doorways and window surrounds are of unembellished ashlar with flat lintels. The north elevation features modern, timber, two-over-two sash windows. Modern doors are present on the ground and first floors. The western flank wall has a single ground-floor window, and the eastern flank wall is blank. The rear, south-facing elevation has scattered windows, with one on the ground floor in the westernmost bay, six on the first floor, and three on the second. A stone mullion window is present on each floor in the easternmost bay, with the ground-floor window blocked. Most windows on the rear elevation are timber, multi-pane casements.

Interior alterations and subdivisions occurred in the late 20th century, including a relocation of the staircase.
