Description
The railway bridge, built around 1863, is possibly designed by William Baker, the Chief Engineer of the London and North Western Railway. It features a cast iron structure supported by stone abutments. The abutments are made of quarry-faced grindstone with dressed stone caps. The double track bed is held up by four cast iron arched ribs, which are cast in two parts and joined at the center. The spandrels of the bridge have five rectangular-headed openings that diminish towards the center. Above, there is a cornice and a solid iron parapet.
This bridge carries the Whaley Bridge to Buxton line of the Stockport, Disley and Whaley Bridge railway, which was opened on June 16, 1863. It was an extension of the line from Stockport to Whaley Bridge that opened in 1857 and became part of the London and North Western Railway in 1866.
