Description

The bridge on Bank Hall Drive adjacent to Down Lee Farm was built in 1830 by John Frith. It is constructed from coursed ashlar grit stone blocks. The bridge features a low arch with a flat string course and is topped by low parapet walls that rise approximately 0.75 meters above the road surface. At each end of the parapets, there are low square pilasters, each decorated with an embossed eight-pointed star set within a diamond. The parapets are capped with a curved, decorative coping.

A date stone in the center of the eastern parapet wall reads 'JF1830' and is adorned with foliate and fluted decoration. This bridge is located on the drive to Bank Hall, which was once the home of the Frith family. The current Bank Hall was rebuilt in the 1870s and is also listed at Grade II, along with its gates and gate piers. John Frith was the last in the direct line of the Frith family and the brother of Squire Frith, who was a Justice of the Peace, Deputy Lieutenant for the county, High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1781, and colonel of the Bowden Chapel volunteers formed in response to threats of Napoleonic invasion.

The bridge is recognized for its architectural interest due to its simple yet carefully executed decorative details and date stone, its historic interest linked to John Frith as a notable local figure from an influential family, and its group value associated with Bank Hall and other listed structures in the village of similar date and style.
