Description
The Royal Hotel, originally a vicarage, dates from the late 18th century and is constructed of coursed, squared gritstone with painted stone dressings and quoins. It features a slate roof, stone gable end stacks, and stone coped gables with moulded kneelers. The building has a moulded cornice and a double fronted elevation that rises three storeys. The central doorcase is topped with a plain entablature and contains double, raised and fielded panelled doors, leading into an inner porch with similar doors. On either side of the entrance are pairs of windows with moulded architraves, which are 19th-century sashes. A stringcourse band runs above these windows. Above, there are two rows of five similar windows. To the east, there is a two-storey addition designed in the same style, featuring five similar windows on each floor.
