Description
Christ Church is a church built in 1837, constructed from coursed gritstone and gritstone ashlar, with slate roofs. It features a nave that has a projecting tower and flanking porches at the west end, along with a lower chancel that includes a north vestry, which are slightly later additions. The church has tall lancet windows with Y tracery, with five windows on both the north and south sides of the nave, separated by buttresses that have two set-offs. The west tower is supported by angle buttresses and includes a Y-traceried west window with one transom, tall single lancet bell openings, and four pinnacles. The east window also features a transom. The west porches occupy the angles between the tower and nave, each having doorways with four-centred arches and labels, along with Gothic panelled doors.
Inside, the church maintains the Georgian 'preaching box' style, featuring a raked gallery on three sides supported by cast iron columns. The gallery fronts are adorned with Gothic tracery set within square 'classical' panels, and there are complete box pews. The stained glass includes works by Mayer & Co Ltd of Munich and London in the east window from 1874, the north aisle east window from 1895, and in the second window from the east on the south side. There is also a southeast upper window from 1922 by C E Kempe.
