Description
Riverside House is a house built in the late 18th century, with an early 19th-century addition and later alterations. It is constructed of stuccoed brick and features a wide eaved, hipped slate roof, along with brick side wall and ridge stacks. The house has five bays, with the three western bays rising three storeys and the two eastern bays, added in the early 19th century, rising two storeys.
On the eastern side, there is a two-storey bow with a large tripartite glazing bar sash set in a reeded surround. The western entrance features a semi-circular headed doorcase with reeded pilasters, a raised keystone, panels in the spandrels, and a moulded canopy above, which houses 20th-century glazed doors and the original traceried fanlight. To the west of the entrance, there is a canted bay window with full-height glazing bar sashes, as well as two flat-headed three-light windows—one to the east with casements and one to the west with small glazing bar sashes. Above these, there are three flat-headed three-light casement windows on the western side and a tall glazing bar sash above the eastern doorcase, accompanied by a large bowed tripartite glazing bar sash similar to the one below. The three western bays feature three glazing bar sashes in the upper storey.
Inside, the early 19th-century section has attractive detailing, including original cornices and roses, as well as a wide staircase with shaped iron balusters. The ground and first-floor eastern rooms contain good quality marble fireplaces.
