Description
The War Memorial located in St Stephen's Churchyard is a First World War memorial erected in 1920. It features stonework by Samuel Hodgkinson of Borrowash and a bronze sculpture of the crucified Christ by Alfred Mowbray and Company of Oxford.
The memorial is constructed with a sandstone base and plinth, an oak cross, and a canopy that was re-covered with slate in the early 21st century. It has an octagonal plan.
Facing north-west, the memorial takes the form of a calvary cross. It consists of a two-step base, a deep plinth, and a canopied oak cross that supports the bronze sculpture. The north-west face of the plinth is inscribed with the words: ‘IN / GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE HEROIC DEAD / 1914 – 1919’. A second inscription at the base of the plinth reads: ‘GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, / THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS’. There are no names recorded on the memorial.
