Description

SK 43 SW PARISH OF ELVASTON BORROWASH ROAD 2/30 (North Side) Grotto on North Side of The Lake at Elvaston Castle GV II Grotto. Early C19. Built for the Earl of Harrington by his landscape gardener William Barron. Stone and brick covered with tufa boulders. Large artificial mound with viewing platform to top and a series of niches to the front. Attached to either side there are irregular arcades of rock and tufa covered arches. Erected during the creation of the lavish gardens, designed by William Barron between 1830 and 1860, which are included in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade II*.
