Description
The stables to the west of Elvaston Castle Coach House are a stable block, now partly used as an office. They were built in the early to mid 19th century for the Earl of Harrington and have undergone some later alterations. The structure is made of red brick with stone dressings on the early 19th-century section, while the rest is brick. The roofs are covered with plain tiles featuring dentilled eaves, except for the early 19th-century bay, which has a hipped graduated slate roof and a moulded stone cornice.
The building is mostly single storey, with a central gabled bay and an early 19th-century bay to the east, totaling 14 bays. The advanced gabled central bay features a segment-headed arch with double plank doors and a segment-headed opening above, flanked by diamond-patterned breathers. To the east, there are two segment-headed stable doors, two full-height sliding doors, and a segment-headed window in between. The early 19th-century bay has a four-centred arched doorcase with incised spandrels and a returned hoodmould to the south, along with a 2-light recessed and chamfered cross window, also with a returned hoodmould, to the east. Above, the south and east sides have 2-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows.
On the west side of the central bay, there are six segment-headed stable doors, and further to the west, there is an advanced later addition featuring semi-circular headed doors and a pedimented brick bay with side pilasters.
