Description
The gate piers and attached walls to the west of the service court at Elvaston Castle are 18th century structures with 19th century walls, both restored in the 20th century. They were built for the Earl of Harrington and are made of stone. The gate features two square piers that stand 12 feet high, flanked by low ashlar walls on either side, which rise at the junction with the piers and are topped by ridgeback copings. Each pier has a square fillet cut out of each corner and moulded bases. The west side of each pier is rusticated and includes a carved frieze displaying the shield of the Earl of Harrington, while the other sides are plain. Each pier is crowned with a moulded cornice and topped by a large ball finial.
