Description

Springthorpe Cottage is a lodge cottage built around 1840 for the Earl of Harrington, likely designed by William Barron. It features red brick construction on a stone plinth with stone dressings and a slate roof. The roof has a small brick side wall stack at the southeast corner and unique parapets on the side walls that curve in at the eaves and out again at the top. Each gable end has flush parapets with curved tops that rise to a central point. The cottage is a single storey with garrets and consists of a single bay plus a lean-to.

The main elevation showcases a central chamfered trefoil-headed doorcase with a studded wooden door, which has a matching inner trefoil-headed panel. This door is flanked by single light chamfered windows with cinquefoil heads. Above the door, there is a cinquefoil-headed niche featuring a large 'H' topped by a coronet. The side elevations include larger central single light cinquefoil-headed windows with small lozenge-shaped windows above, cut out of the brick. The rear elevation has a lean-to with a central trefoil-headed door and similar single light windows on either side, plus a larger cinquefoil-headed window above. Originally, all windows had diamond pattern cast iron glazing, though some of these are now missing.

Springthorpe Cottage was built as part of a series of similar structures during the creation of the elaborate gardens designed by William Barron between 1830 and 1860, which are recognized in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade II*.
