Description
The Information Centre and Shop at Elvaston Castle is a stableblock that dates from the early 19th century and was restored around 1970. It was originally built for the Earl of Harrington. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, featuring a brick plinth and a hipped slate roof. It has two storeys and consists of seven bays, with the five central bays being slightly advanced. There is also a single-storey wing to the east.
The central entrance features a chamfered four-centred arched doorcase with incised spandrels, a returned hoodmould, and double panelled doors. On either side of the entrance, there are two recessed and chamfered cross windows, each with returned hoods. In the recessed bays to either side, there are similar doors to the central one, and in the single-storey wing to the east, there is a similar cross window. Above the ground floor, there are seven recessed and chamfered 2-light mullion windows. The ground floor windows have single pane glazing, while the upper windows are fitted with leaded lights.
