Description
The boat house at Elvaston Castle, located at the east end of the lake, was built in the mid-19th century for the Earl of Harrington, likely by architect William Barron. It is constructed of red brick and features a steeply pitched roof with banded fishscale and plain tiles, along with decorative bargeboards on the gables and wide overhanging eaves. The building is two stories tall and consists of a single bay.
On the lake-side elevation, there is a full-width opening with a timber lintel supported by a wooden pier at the center, above which is a wide unglazed segment-headed window. The rear elevation includes two full-height pilaster strips with a low boarded opening beneath, and a central segment-headed doorcase with a plank door above. Above this doorcase is another unglazed segment-headed window.
The boat house was constructed as part of the elaborate gardens designed by William Barron between 1830 and 1860, which are recognized in the Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade II*.
