Description
Cranfleet Lock is a lock chamber and gates built in 1797, with some minor repairs made later. The structure is primarily made of ashlar, with parts rebuilt using engineering brick, and features both metal and wooden gates. The chamber is wide and has a drop of about 15 feet between levels, and is in good repair, although it has concrete copings. Iron steps are located on either side of the chamber, and small iron bollards line the sides. The wooden gates at each end are equipped with metal reinforced balance beams, rack and pinion paddle mechanisms, and metal handrails, along with wide plank walkways on the west sides. Adjacent to each gate is a semi-circle of concrete with brick steps. This lock was constructed as part of the Cranfleet Canal.
