Description

70 The Ridings is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century and early 18th century, with some parts rebuilt in the early 19th century and further additions and alterations made in the 1980s. The building retains remnants of a 17th-century timber frame on an original stone plinth in the two northern bays, which have mostly been rebuilt in red brick during the early 19th century. The two southern bays are constructed of early 18th-century red brick with vitrified headers in Flemish bond, featuring a stepped and sawtooth brick band at the first floor.

The northern bays have a steeply pitched slate roof with two roof lights and a brick gable stack on the north side, while the southern bay has a plain tile roof with a rendered brick gable stack on the south side. The bay in between has a higher slate roof with a brick stack to the north. The farmhouse is two storeys high and consists of four bays. The northern part features a blocked central doorcase with a segmental head, flanked by three 3-light segment-headed windows with horizontal sliding plain sashes. Attached to the south is a 20th-century brick porch with a glazed door facing south. Above the porch, to the north, are two 2-light horizontal sliding sashes with roof lights above. The taller southern bay has a central 3-light segment-headed horizontal sliding sash with a similar flat-headed sash above. The southern bay also includes a single-storey lean-to with a 20th-century door to the north and a 3-light horizontal sliding sash to the south.

Inside, there is a large inglenook fireplace in one of the ground floor rooms and moulded beams. The first floor features queen strut roof trusses with cambered ties and windbraces.
