Description

The ha-ha, walls, gates, clock tower, sculptures, and terracing at Locko Park were designed in the 1850s by Henry Stevens, with some elements added in 1890. They are constructed from coursed squared gritstone and ashlar, while the sculptures are made of cast metal. The gritstone ha-ha surrounds three sides of the house and extends westward, enclosing formal gardens.

At the northeast corner of the house, there are two square gate piers with moulded tops and ball finials, accompanied by wrought iron gates. A second pair of gate piers is located to the northeast. The ha-ha continues along the east side of the house, featuring flat copings, short banded piers with ball finials, and iron chains in between. The main entrance archway is located to the south and is an Italianate ashlar structure with urns and curving wing walls to the east, adorned with female sculptures holding globe lamps.

At the southeast corner stands an Italianate pier topped with a sculpture of two fighting lions. The ha-ha encloses the south front of the house, featuring flat copings and a central flight of steps. A sculpture of a lion with its prey is positioned at the southwest angle. The ha-ha also encloses the west side of the house, which has a low parapet wall.

In the center of this area is an Italianate clock tower, dated 1890, which features round-arched doorways on two sides and round-arched windows on the other two sides, along with a frieze of intersecting circles above. The upper floor displays a clock face to the east and round-arched bell openings on the other faces, complemented by a fluted frieze, moulded cornice, and ball finials. The east side of the clock tower is flanked by sculptures of two students, and at the northwest corner, there is a rusticated pier with a dentilled top. The ha-ha returns to the west, enclosing formal terracing that includes sculptures of an eagle, lions, and urns.
