Description
The Retreat House, formerly known as The Rectory, is a rectory that has been converted into a retreat house. It dates from the early 18th century, with elements from the mid-18th century and early 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with minimal stone dressings and features plain tile roofs. It has brick gable stacks and a stack that rises between two roofs. The eaves cornice is dentil and moulded in stone.
The structure has a double range plan and stands three storeys tall, with a six-bay south elevation. The front is symmetrical with five bays, plus an additional bay to the east that is slightly lower. The central doorway features a moulded stone doorcase with a pulvinated frieze and a bracketed pediment. The half-glazed door is flanked by two glazing bar sashes on each side, which have small stone keyblocks above them. A plain brick stringcourse connects the keyblocks.
On the first floor, there is a central round window with key and impost blocks, along with a glazing bar sash. This is flanked by two glazing bar sashes on each side, all under flat keyed arches. The third floor is half-height and has a central bull's eye window with keyblocks at the cardinal points, flanked by two glazing bar sashes under keyed flat arches. The additional bay to the east also has two glazing bar sashes. All windows are fitted with stone sills.
The west elevation features first and second floor brick bands, irregular and partly blocked fenestration, and visible evidence of mid-18th century refronting and raising in the brickwork. The north elevation has irregular projections with mostly early 19th century windows. Inside, there is a two-flight return staircase with turned balusters, a front room on the ground floor with painted raised and fielded panelling, and an upper room that contains an early 18th century painted stone chimneypiece.
