Description
The mausoleum west of St Matthew's Church is a Grade II* listed building, designed by G F Bodley in 1897 for the Bateman family. It is built in the Perpendicular style using gritstone ashlar and coursed squared gritstone. The roof is concealed behind parapets with moulded copings. The structure is single storey and rectangular in shape, featuring a chamfered plinth and a moulded stringcourse adorned with fleurons at the base of the parapet.
On the east elevation, there is a five-light window with a four-centred arch and cusped lights. The plinth steps up over a relief panel that displays a decorative cross. The southern elevation mirrors this with a similar relief panel and a five-light squared-headed window above, which has cusped lancet lights. This elevation is flanked by thin gableted buttresses, and beyond them are cusped ogee niches that contain carved figures of bishops.
The north elevation features a doorway with a moulded surround, in front of which is a piece of gritstone walling, believed to be remnants of the old manor house. The west elevation has a similar three-light window, also flanked by narrow buttresses. Inside, the mausoleum boasts a painted panelled roof, ashlar walls, an altar, a reredos, and the Bateman tomb, along with stained glass in the three windows.
