Description

The saw mill on the Osmaston Manor estate was built around 1845 by Henry Stevens of Derby. It features coursed squared rock-faced limestone with sandstone dressings and a stone slate roof that has deeply overhanging Swiss-style eaves supported by moulded wooden brackets. The building has two gable end stacks with arcaded and gabled tops and is set into the hillside, enhancing the picturesque quality of the park.

The north elevation faces the lake and includes a large overshot waterwheel, sheltered by an open timber work structure supported on stone piers. To the right, there are steps leading up the side of the building, passing a doorway with a three-light recessed and chamfered mullion window above it, and another similar three-light window above that, both featuring diamond lights. A similar three-light window is located to the left, along with two two-light windows under the eaves in the center. There are also two shallow pitched gabled roof dormers with similar two-light windows, all with diamond lights, and three skylights in the roof.

The south elevation has a broad central entrance and similar mullioned windows. It also features two shallow pitched gabled roof dormers with two-light windows and three skylights. The slope of the roof extends to provide shelter over the entrance, and at the west end, there is a raised ventilator in the pitch of the roof. The west and east elevations match, each having two two-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows on the ground floor and two similar windows above, more closely spaced, with all windows featuring diamond lights. Additionally, there is a curved dam wall and ornamental cascade attached to the northeast.
