Description

Lowerstreet Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with a mid-18th century rear wing. The building features a close studded timber frame with lath and plaster infill, which is partly encased in brick from the 18th century. The rear wing is constructed of brick and has a first-floor band, topped with a plain tile roof. There is a massive brick ridge stack and a later brick stack situated in the pitch of the roof. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a T-plan layout.

The north elevation consists of three bays, showcasing exposed close studding with a middle rail and braces below the eaves. An off-centre doorway aligns with the stack and features a massive studded oak plank door. To the right of the door are two 3-light wooden casements, while to the left is a 2-light wooden casement. Above, there are three 3-light wooden casements and a small square window over the door. The east gable end wall displays the timber frame, while the west gable end wall is encased in brick.

The 18th-century rear wing has 3-light casement windows set under segmental arches. Inside, the farmhouse includes stud partitions and oak plank doors within wooden surrounds featuring Tudor arches. Some windows are equipped with drop shutters. The central room on the ground floor boasts a large inglenook fireplace and a salt cupboard. The room at the east end has early 17th-century panelling and a panelled door. The upper floor has a three-room layout with a corridor along the south side of the middle room, and it retains the upper flight to the attic of a wooden winder staircase. The roof is supported by double purlins. The rear wing contains raised and fielded panelled doors and a dogleg staircase with turned balusters. There is also a small 20th-century addition at the southeast corner.
